A Virtual Culinary Journey: The Savory Oatmeal Class

Embrace the transformative power of plant-based living!

In the fast-paced world we live in, sometimes we miss out on moments that could have added a pinch of flavor to our daily routine. Such was the case if you missed the live Zoom class on crafting the perfect savory oatmeal. However, all is not lost; I am sharing the scoop on the delightful recipe shared during the class that promises to transform your breakfast game. Let's dive into the details!

The Virtual Class

It was a warm November Thursday morning, and I was excited to teach this class in my Plant Based Nutrition Kitchen where I was introducing all the participants to a savory adventure in the form of a live Zoom class. The topic? Savory oatmeal, a twist to the classic breakfast staple that intrigued me.

As the clock ticked closer to the class start time, I found myself a little anxious as I prepared to teach this virtual culinary experience. But just in the nick of time, I rushed to my laptop, clicked the Zoom link, and taught the class – my kitchen staged for the morning.

The Recipe Unveiled

As the instructor, I enthusiastically introduced the concept of savory oatmeal, hoping everyone’s taste buds tingled in anticipation. The key, I explained, lies in balancing wholesome oats with a medley of savory flavors. Here's a snapshot of the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Rolled oats.
  • ½ Red Lentils
  • 3 cups of Water or Vegetable broth
  • Chopped Spinach
  • Protein of choice - Sautéed mushrooms.
  • Salt, pepper, and any preferred herbs or spices.  We used onion powder, garlic powder, turmeric powder.
  • Nutritional Yeast.

Instructions:

1.     Cook the rolled oats and red lentils in the broth until they reach a creamy consistency.

2.     Top the savory creation with your protein of choice.  We used sauteed mushrooms.

3.     Sprinkle chopped spinach over the top.

4.     Season with salt, pepper and top with nutritional yeast.

The Virtual Experience

Despite my initial anxiety about this class, I found myself engrossed in the virtual culinary journey and I look forward to connecting with fellow food enthusiasts as I continue to teach more classes in 2024 from my Plant Based Nutrition Kitchen.

The Post-Class Bliss

I invite you to recreate the magic in your own kitchen.  As I prepared the recipe in my own kitchen, the aroma of the savory symphony filled the air and I want the same for you.  Please feel free to reply and ask any questions or share your experience with this recipe.

Try This Golden Girl Juice Recipe If You Want To Change Things

If you are anything like me then you are looking for ways to keep healthy and boost your immunity.  Can juicing boost immunity?  And, what does pineapple ginger and carrot do for the body?

Try this Golden Girl Juice if you want to change things.  Sweet with a kick from ginger and lemon, this recipe can be enjoyed year around and is both anti-inflammatory and rich in essential nutrients.

Allow yourself to expand and eliminate your boundaries.

GOLDEN GIRL JUICE RECIPE

  • 2 lemons, peeled (skin and pits removed) (use 1 lemon for the blender method)
  • 1 inch (2.5 cm) knob of fresh ginger (or 1/2 tsp ground ginger; add more if you want a more spicy juice)
  • 1 inch (2.5 cm) knob of fresh turmeric (or 1/2 tsp ground turmeric)
  • 6 medium to large carrots (use 4 carrots for the blender method)
  • Optional: 1 cup (170 grams) frozen or fresh pineapple, peeled and cored pineapple cut into pieces (use half a cup for the blender method).

INSTRUCTIONS

For the juicer method:

Wash and (if you want to) peel the ginger, turmeric, and carrot. If you don’t peel the carrot, ginger, and turmeric, wash them thoroughly.  Peel the lemon (the white inside is ok).  If necessary, cut the ingredients so they can fit in the juicer.  Juice and serve immediately.

For the blender method:

Wash and (optional) peel the ginger, turmeric, and carrots.  Remove the skin and pits from the lemon.  Add the carrot, ginger, turmeric, lemon, and 1 cup of water to a blender. Blend slowly and then increase the speed. All ingredients should be well blended. If the mixture is too thick, add more water.  Pour the mixture through a strainer or nut milk bag and remove the pulp (fiber). Serve the juice immediately.

The Magical Power of Juicing

Juicing is the single most powerful way to lose weight, heal the body and turn back the clock. Juice fasting is not some new health fad.  I am recommending a daily juice for everyone plus juice cleansing four times a year, preferably with the changing seasons.

What's the best juice to boost your immune system?

  1. Oranges + grapefruits. Oranges and grapefruits are packed with vitamin C which is essential for a healthy immune system.
  2. Green apples + carrots + oranges.
  3. Beetroots + carrots + ginger + apples.
  4. Celery.
  5. Cucumber.
  6. Watermelon.

Smoothies and Self Care for Today's Black Women

Blend your way to self-love with every vibrant sip!

Hello there, lovely members of the Sisters to Sister organization.  This month's blog post is all about what I call "Liquid Nutrition"

  1. Nutrient-Rich Ingredients: Incorporate fruits, vegetables, and superfoods like kale, spinach, berries, chia seeds, and flaxseeds into your smoothies. These ingredients provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health.
  2. Protein Power: Adding sources of protein like Greek yogurt, almond butter, or plant-based protein powder can help maintain muscle health and keep you feeling full and satisfied.
  3. Healthy Fats: Include ingredients like avocado, coconut oil, or nuts to provide healthy fats that support brain health and satiety.
  4. Hydration: Use coconut water, herbal teas, or almond milk as the base for your smoothies to stay hydrated.
  5. Customization: Tailor your smoothies to your specific wellness goals, whether that's boosting energy, supporting immune health, or aiding digestion.
  6. Consistency: Incorporate smoothies into your daily routine for sustained benefits. A consistent intake of nutrient-dense foods can have a significant impact on your overall health.

Nourish your body, mind and spirit with self-care in liquid form.

Yummy Vegan Recipe:

Creating a vegan smoothie that supports weight loss for Black women, or anyone, involves choosing ingredients that are nutritious, low in calories, and high in fiber. Here's a delicious and nutritious vegan smoothie recipe:

  • 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk (or any unsweetened plant-based milk
  • 1/2 cup of frozen mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries)
  • 1/2 ripe banana (for natural sweetness and creaminess)
  • 1 tablespoon of chia seeds (for fiber and healthy fats)
  • 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed (for additional fiber and omega-3 fatty acids)
  • 1 cup of fresh spinach (for vitamins, minerals, and fiber)
  • 1/2 small avocado (for creaminess and healthy fats)
  • 1 teaspoon of matcha green tea powder (for antioxidants and a mild caffeine boost)
  • 1 teaspoon of agave nectar or maple syrup (optional for added sweetness)
  • Ice cubes (optional, for a colder and thicker smoothie)
  1. Start by adding the almond milk to your blender as the base.
  2. Add the frozen mixed berries and the ripe banana. These fruits provide natural sweetness, fiber, and antioxidants.
  3. Include the chia seeds and ground flaxseed. These seeds are excellent sources of fiber and healthy fats, which help you stay full.
  4. Toss in the fresh spinach for added nutrients and fiber. Spinach is low in calories but high in vitamins and minerals.
  5. Add the avocado for creaminess and healthy monounsaturated fats, which help keep you satisfied.
  6. Incorporate the matcha green tea powder for its antioxidant properties and a mild caffeine boost to support your metabolism.
  7. If you prefer a sweeter taste, add a teaspoon of agave nectar or maple syrup. Adjust the sweetness to your liking.
  8. If you want your smoothie to be colder and thicker, add some ice cubes.
  9. Blend all the ingredients until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency.
  10. Pour your weight loss vegan smoothie into a glass and enjoy!

Smoothies and self-care can be powerful tools for today's Black women to enhance their physical and emotional well-being.  This smoothie is rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats, making it a satisfying and nutritious option for weight loss.

In a world of chaos, a well-made smoothie is a sip of serenity.

Nurturing Heart Health on a Plant Based Diet

Dear Sisters,

Did you know that taking care of your heart is an act of self-love and empowerment?

Keeping your heart healthy can go a long way toward enjoying years of good health. One of the easiest ways to get it on track is by making simple heart-healthy swaps in your meals. Here are some practical tips to help you hack your meals to make the most of your nutrition and put your heart and mind at ease.  💓💛💚

Be an advocate for your own health

Swap refined carbs with whole grains!

Whole grains contain fiber which lowers LDL cholesterol, commonly known as the bad type. Fiber takes longer for the body to digest, so you will feel full longer than you would if you eat refined carbs. Swap out white bread with whole wheat, choose oatmeal instead of corn flakes, and make brown rice your carb for balance in your meals.

Bake, Broil, or Steam rather than fry!

You can try a simple swap: swap out fried foods for baked or broiled. You'll notice that baked and broiled foods will taste better than fried foods, so this isn't a hard swap to stick to!

Steaming is a cooking method that involves using steam to cook food. It is considered one of the healthiest cooking techniques because it preserves the nutrients, flavors, and colors of the food while minimizing the use of added fats and oils.

Swap salt with spices!

Too much salt can cause issues. The spices in your spice rack are a far superior way to add flavor and nutrients without adding more salt. Make sure that spice blends do not contain sodium as they can cause blood pressure to rise to unhealthy levels.

Choose nuts over chips!!

If it's something crunchy you seek for a snack, choose nuts instead of going for chips. Nuts give you more fiber as well as unsaturated fat. Measure out some snack-sized servings of nuts to keep in your pantry for easy access.  Even better, buy your nuts in a shell and eat them the old-fashioned way by cracking the shell first on your own.

Use avocado rather than mayo!

Avocados are a heart-healthy swap you can use on your sandwiches. Instead of mayonnaise, mash up an avocado and smear it onto your whole grain bread or wrap. It will add more flavor and nutrition while keeping your chosen bread from feeling too dry.

Infuse water instead of drinking soda

Infusing water with lemon, cucumber, or herbs like mint gives it a delicious flavor and more nutrients. Choose to drink this over soda and other sugary drinks to keep your heart in good health.

Recipe of the month – Steamed Broccoli with Lemon and Garlic

Ingredients:

  • 1 head of broccoli, cut into florets
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes for a bit of heat

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the broccoli by washing and cutting it into bite-sized florets.
  2. In a steamer basket or a steaming pot, bring water to a boil.
  3. Place the broccoli florets in the steamer basket and cover with a lid. Steam for about 5-7 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender but still crisp.
  4. While the broccoli is steaming, heat a small skillet over medium heat. Add a teaspoon of olive oil.
  5. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 1-2 minutes, until fragrant. Be careful not to let it brown.
  6. Once the broccoli is steamed, transfer it to a serving dish.
  7. Drizzle the lemon juice over the steamed broccoli.
  8. Pour the sautéed garlic over the broccoli.
  9. Sprinkle lemon zest over the top for added flavor.
  10. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if desired.
  11. Gently toss the broccoli to ensure even distribution of the flavors.
  12. Serve the steamed broccoli as a healthy side dish or add it to salads, grain bowls, or as a topping for baked potatoes.

Enjoy your delicious and nutritious steamed broccoli with lemon and garlic.

Your wellbeing deserves all the attention it can get

By making these swaps, you'll be taking small steps to achieve big results with the health of your heart.
