An irresistible Smoothie Recipe, Just for You!

Hello Queens.

Standing in the kitchen, eyes scanning the fridge shelves, contemplating a smoothie but finding yourself captivated by the array of ingredients instead? Been there, done that.

#nourishyourbody  #healthyrecipes  #kitcheninspiration  #wellnessjourney

Sure, whipping up a salad or defrosting some soup from the freezer is always an option, but sometimes you crave something cool and refreshing, something that tantalizes your taste buds and fills you with satisfaction, all while being quick and healthy.

That's when it hits you: Teri Sewell, Culinary Nutrition Expert, is an expert at smoothies and juicing.  I can easily visit her website wellness for inspiration, text her or join her mailing list.  Besides Teri is a plant-based nutrition kitchen coach and is also a passionate foodie. (Note:  More recipes coming soon).

You can always count on her to share her recipes on her blog or at a Smoothie Social or demonstration.  Her smoothies are convenient, delicious and a healthy way to get a variety of nutrients into your diet.  It's not just about being yummy they can help support weight management.

And speaking of smoothies, here's one of my personal favorites:

Recipe:  Creamy Cocoa-Berry Bliss Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 ripe banana, frozen

1 cup mixed berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries), frozen

1 tablespoon cocoa powder

1 tablespoon almond butter

1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any plant-based milk of choice)

1 tablespoon maple syrup or agave nectar (optional, for added sweetness)

A handful of spinach (optional, for extra greens)

Instructions:

Prepare the Ingredients: If your banana and berries aren't already frozen, you can freeze them in advance or use fresh and add some ice cubes to the blender for a colder smoothie.

Blend: In a blender, combine the frozen banana, mixed berries, cocoa powder, almond butter, almond milk, and optional sweetener and spinach, if using.

Blend Until Smooth: Blend all the ingredients until smooth and creamy. If the consistency is too thick, you can add more almond milk, a little at a time, until you reach your desired thickness.

Taste and Adjust: Taste the smoothie and adjust the sweetness if needed by adding more maple syrup or agave nectar.

Serve and Enjoy: Pour the smoothie into glasses and enjoy immediately. You can also garnish with additional berries or a sprinkle of cocoa powder if desired.

This smoothie is packed with plant-based goodness, from the antioxidants in the berries to the potassium in the banana and the healthy fats in the almond butter. It's a delightful treat that's perfect for any time of day, whether as a quick breakfast, a refreshing snack, or a post-workout refuel. Plus, its chocolatey flavor makes it an indulgent yet guilt-free option that black women and anyone else will surely appreciate!

Making Your Meals Meaningful

What would it be like for you to make your dining experience one of connection, renewal, and nourishment?

This can mean something different for each of us, but it all boils down to some core concepts. Up-leveling your dining experience can improve your days in more than one way -- prioritizing connection at mealtimes will help you grow in relationships, slowing down will help with digestion and absorption of nutrients, and enable you to practice mindfulness.

Be your own best friend today!

Instead of plugging in when you should be tuning out, try some of these tips for an all-around better dining experience:

1. Create meals you love. If you're in the habit of cooking what you love, you'll look forward to mealtimes much more. This doesn't mean that the meals you make need to be elaborate or take hours to prepare. But when you cook, serve and eat foods that are colorful and flavorful, you'll be much more likely to slow down and savor them.

2. Set the mood. This means paying attention to the environment where you have your meals. For example, it might be easy to grab your plate and head to the couch to catch the news or your favorite comfort show rerun. But setting the table, dimming the lights, even lighting a candle or playing some music can make your mealtime much more enjoyable.

3. Set the pace. Slowing down and enjoying your food really takes your dining experience to the next level. It seems obvious, but being mindful of each bite you take really enhances the flavor. Tap into each of your senses during mealtimes. This means paying attention to the presentation of the food, how it smells, what it tastes like, the texture. When you minimize distractions (like electronics), it allows you to be present.

4. Connection. Connecting with others is another way to be intentional during your meal. Inviting a friend over and practicing the art of conversation helps you to take a breather between bites. We tend to overeat and self-soothe with food when we are feeling lonely. It is harder to get lost in mindless second and third helpings when others are dining with us. You can even plan some Zoom dinners with friends if you live alone.

5. Know your limits. And finally, when you're beginning to feel full, put your fork down. Without distractions, it's easier to listen to our body's cues and know when we are satisfied. Instead, stopping when satisfied will leave us in a much better frame of mind. We will look forward to mealtime more if we can finish while feeling energized and satisfied, instead of sluggish and stuffed.

I've found that implementing these practices changed the way I view eating, and I hope they are helpful for you, too. It's genuinely about nourishing your body and mind. When you find your pace and make that mental shift, your mealtimes will be a life-giving part of your day you look forward to every day. If eating is something we do multiple times a day, every day -- let's focus on making it enjoyable and nurturing!

Don't be afraid to reach for what you want!
