But recently, I’ve had to sit with a new realization.
Financial stress quietly disrupts everything we call wellness.
As Black women, we are often the steady ones. The dependable ones. The resourceful ones. We manage responsibilities, support family, show up for community, and maintain resilience — sometimes without pause. That level of responsibility carries weight. And when income feels limited, uncertain, or dependent on systems we don’t control, our bodies feel it.
Sleep changes. Energy dips. Patience shortens.
No amount of green juice can override chronic financial anxiety.
Over time, I’ve started expanding how I define wellness. It’s not just what I eat or how often I move. It’s also the flexibility I have. The choices available to me. The ability to say yes or no without panic.
Even small income streams can shift posture and perspective. There’s something powerful about knowing you can create value beyond a paycheck. It doesn’t have to replace everything overnight — but it changes how you stand in your life.
I recently joined a free community called Your First 5K w/ Arlan that focuses on helping people turn their lived experience into income. What resonated with me is the simplicity — it’s about building clear offers and getting paid, not building a massive audience first. If financial flexibility is part of your wellness journey this year, it may be worth exploring.
For me, this isn’t about hustle. It’s about alignment.
Wellness, at this stage of my life, includes flexibility. It includes ownership. It includes designing income that supports the lifestyle I talk about so often.
If we’re truly committed to holistic wellness, perhaps it’s time we expand the definition.
